Composting With Pallets

Wooden shipping pallets are easily recycled into large, heavy-duty compost bins. Pallets are available for free from many area businesses, assemble in minutes, and with them you can produce rich humus, mulch and compost year after year. Here's how:

A Simple Pallet Bin

Obtain five pallets with narrow spaces between slats (1/2" - 1") and of uniform size. Many pallets measure 40" by 48" and will form a 48 cubic foot capacity bin. Pick up pallets from loading docks, freight companies, hardware stores, product wholesalers, nurseries and garden centers. Each year, American businesses send more than 300 million pallets to landfills and incinerators -- there are always plenty around for free.  Good places to check are print shops, tire wholesalers, even central post office facilities which handle bulk mail.

To begin, place one pallet (slat-side up) on level ground. This pallet is the bottom of your bin and will allow for good drainage and aeration by keeping yard trimmings above the ground. Properly drained and aerated compost decomposes quickly and without odors.  Some people like to staple or nail hardware cloth to the slats to provide a smooth surface for shoveling and to prevent materials falling between the slats, although if the space between the slats is less than one inch, this step is generally unnecessary.

Arrange the remaining pallets upright around each side of the base to form a box, short (40") sides up. Use spare wire, coathangers, or nylon rope to fasten the pallets together. Join pallets at each corner, lashing both the top and bottom. You can gain access to your compost pile by unfastening one side of a pallet and swinging it out like a hinged door.

Multi-Bin Units

Large properties and institutions like schools and churches may require a larger compost bin system to accommodate their materials. And gardeners looking for quick compost may prefer a multi-bin system to make turning materials easier.

First, construct a single bin as described above. Then expand your compost system by setting another pallet to the right of the base of your existing bin, and adjoining it. Form another box with three additional pallets to form the door and sides of the new bin. The two bins will share one side. Additional "bins" can be added-on using just four pallets at a time.

Two-bin systems allow easy turning of materials by transferring decomposing trimmings from one side to the other. Three-bin systems are favored by aggressive composters, with one bin used for newer materials, which are "turned" or transferred into the second bin after several weeks (or months), and later into the final "curing" bin for several weeks or months, prior to use. Churches and schools frequently construct three, four, or more bin systems to handle materials.


Lifespan and Maintenance

Easy Composting

Composting is a simple, natural process. There is no need to purchase special activators or fertilizers to make the materials in your compost pile or bin break down. Compost just happens! Here are some basic strategies for making compost "happen" for you:

Slow and Easy Composting
  1. Build your compost pile anytime of year.
  2. Create a simple, freestanding pile no more than 5 feet high (preferably 3 feet long on each side), or build or buy an inexpensive bin to keep your pile tidy.
  3. Locate on level, well-drained ground in either sun or shade -- stay away from wooden fences and buildings, and avoid placing on your neighbor's property line. Don't set up over shallow tree roots.
  4. Build a six inch base of branches, twigs or brush for drainage and aeration (old wooden pallets work extremely well).
  5. Use leaves by themselves -- or mix in grass and other "green" garden trimmings for quicker compost. When adding new materials to an existing pile, be sure to mix them in thoroughly -- especially green materials like grass. Don't create layers.
  6. Don't build your pile with grass alone -- mix in dry leaves, straw or wood chips to avoid odors.
  7. Moisten materials as you add them and leave a concave depression at the top of the pile to capture rainwater.
  8. Keep materials moist throughout the year -- but not wet. It is often best not to cover your pile to let water in. A dry pile will not compost.
  9. Never add meat, bones, fat, oils, dairy products or processed foods to avoid odors and pests. Never add diseased plants, weeds with seeds, or cat or dog wastes.
  10. Try to turn, fluff, or aerate on occasion -- whether every week, every month or just once or twice a year.
  11. Wait a while (6-12 months) and get ready to use your compost as a top-dressing for your lawn, a mulch for trees and shrubs, or a side-dressing for annuals, herbs, and vegetables.
  12. Compost is ready to use when it is dark brown-black, crumbly, and sweet-smelling. Enjoy!

Vintage Composting (Even Easier Composting)

  1. Use two bins: one bin for each alternate year (e.g. 2009, 2010).
  2. Add compostable materials only to one bin in the first year (2009).
  3. In the following year, leave the first bin alone and only add materials to the second bin. As the yard trimmings in the first bin decompose, the amount of materials in the bin will appear to shrink. Resist the temptation to "top off" the 2009 bin.
  4. With the next year (2011), harvest compost from 2009 bin and start filling with 2010 materials. Do not top off 2009 bin.
  5. Keep alternating, year after year, going from one bin to another with each year. Never add fresh materials to last year's bin.
  6. Materials in a vintage bin system will compost for at least 12-24 months; enough time to produce excellent mulch with almost no maintenance.
  7. To ensure high quality compost, use some of the basic steps (watering, turning) from the Slow and Easy method.

Active Composting (Fast, "Hot" Compost)

  1. Use a two- or three-bin system.
  2. Try to obtain a mixture of two parts (by volume) high nitrogen materials like grass and fresh-pulled weeds and one-part high-carbon materials like dried leaves and woodchips.
  3. Try to shred leaves (use lawnmower or mechanical shredder) and, especially, woody materials. Keep particle sizes small.
  4. Mix materials thoroughly together.
  5. Follow basic instructions for Slow and Easy method.
  6. Keep moisture level at 50% (consistency of a wrung-out sponge).
  7. Turn or "aerate" pile by moving materials from bin to bin (back and forth for 2-bin system, serially for 3-bin system) every 2-4 weeks.
  8. Compost should be ready in 6-12 weeks.

Troubleshooting


The best advice for handling problems with your compost pile is to treat that problem immediately. Key concerns are:

  • Odors. Usually caused by soggy, anaerobic conditions. Turn the pile thoroughly and add dry leaves or hay, if necessary. Set the pile on top of a wooden pallet or base of branches and twigs.
  • Pests. For rodent problems, remove and discontinue the addition of any food scraps. Turn pile more frequently; maintain moisture. For pets and scavengers, be sure to always bury food scraps under 1' of leaves and other compostables; place another pallet on top of pile to serve as a "lid." For insects like ants, flies, and bees, keep pile moist and turn more frequently.
  • Sluggish Pile. If your materials are not decomposing, check moisture content (it's the number one reason piles don't work); don't cover bin with plastic. Turn your pile to aerate it, increasing the oxygen content. Add nitrogen sources like grass clippings, weeds, agricultural manures, or urea.

You don't need large flower beds or a vegetable garden to use compost. Here are the most common applications:

  • Mulch. Apply compost up to 3" deep around trees and shrubs and in planting areas to suppress weed growth, provide a long-term supply of nutrients, conserve moisture, prevent soil erosion and compaction, and moderate soil temperature changes. Especially effective in fall and spring.
  • Topdressing. Spread compost 1/8"-1/4" deep on top of existing lawns with a spreader or rake. Finished compost should be sifted or "screened" to remove clumps and twigs. Build a simple, inexpensive sifter using hardware cloth and a frame of two-by-four lumber.
  • Sidedressing. A 1"-2" layer of compost can be spread around vegetables (especially tomatoes, peppers, eggplant), shrubs and flowers during active growing season to replace nutrients and protect root systems.
  • Soil Amendment. Mix 2"-3" of compost into the top 6"-8" of heavy clay or sandy soil with a mechanical tiller, garden spade, or shovel. Compost will improve drainage and moisture retention, prevent compaction, supply nutrients and make existing nutrients more available to plants.
  • Potting Mediums. Sifted compost (1/3 part) can be mixed with potting soil and vermiculite or perlite to create a superior potting medium.
NB: Composting that's going to be mixed into soil or potting mediums should be fully decomposed. Let compost age or "cure" for one month after removal from your bin.

Smart Solutions for Steep, Sunny Slopes

A steep, sunny slope in your landscape can be a real challenge, especially if you’re trying to manage that area as a lawn. The slope itself makes mowing difficult -- if not outright dangerous -- and it is difficult to keep the turf green, as most water simply flows downhill, leaving the hillsides brown and barren. A proper solution should really turn this landscaping liability into an attractive asset.

There are a number of suitable solutions, but most are fairly expensive, such as designing and installing retaining walls, along with extensive replanting. Moreover, if the angle of your slope exceeds 20 degrees, you may need to engage a soils engineer or landscape architect. There might even be heavy equipment in your future. Ka-ching!

A simpler fix, ideal for the do-it-yourselfer, would simply call for replacing turf grass with a low maintenance ground cover. Keep in mind that many of the most popular ground covers are actually invasive weeds, and can often create management headaches in their own right. These include Five-leaf Akebia, Japanese Barberry, Crown Vetch, Wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei), and English Ivy, which can often bake in full sun. Moreover, the “wild” nature of such plants makes mulching difficult, and can lead to even more weeds taking hold. So much for low maintenance!

For my money – or yours – one of the best solutions is an evergreen groundcover: something with an obedient and predictable growth habit, and an attractive year-round appearance. Think juniper.

There are literally scores of procumbent juniper species, and similar conifers, which will happily bask in the hottest sun, stretching across your hillside over the course of several years, all providing excellent erosion control and weed suppression, especially when combined with diligent annual mulching, and saving you the need to combine mowing with mountaineering. And these hardy plants are almost always drought-tolerant, helping to conserve water, while requiring no fertilizing.

Among the most common and popular junipers used as groundcovers are the creeping junipers (Juniperus horizontalis), slow to medium-growing shrubs, which form dense, aromatic mats between 12 and 18 inches in height, extending trailing branches from four to eight feet across, depending on the cultivar. Most feature either soft or prickly scale-like bluish-green foliage, which often “bronzes” once hit by cold winter temperatures. But don’t worry, they will “green up” again in the spring as air and soil temperatures warm up.

Blue Rug or ‘Wiltoni’ is probably the most popular juniper sold. It hugs the ground at four to six inches, and provides coverage up to eight feet in diameter. Blue Rug is drought-tolerant and thrives in conditions ranging from coastal Maine to the mountains of Georgia.

Other popular cultivars offer a Mardi Gras parade of colors and shades, from gold to green to purple, in a range of heights. Favorites include ‘Bar Harbor,’ which is similar to Blue Rug, although more colorful in winter, the bright green ‘Emerald Spreader,’ four-to-six inch tall ‘Prince of Wales,’ gold-variegated ‘Mother Lode,’ and ‘Pancake,’ lowest of the low at two-to-three inches.

‘Blue Star’(J. squamata) is a taller, different species, featuring cool blue foliage, and a pyramidal growth habit. This selection will generally stay below two feet in height, but can reach three feet, with only a two to four foot spread. It would be especially useful under a retaining wall for terraces, or against a rock outcropping.

Not all junipers are groundcovers: some are actually full-grown trees, like our native Eastern Red Cedar, which reaches an impressive 30 feet. Others tend to be shrubs, useful as hedges, such as the Chinese Junipers (J. chinensis), which reach about six feet in height, although some can become small trees up to 20 feet. One notable exception is Sargent Juniper, a cultivar that hovers at about 18 to 24 inches with an eight to ten foot spread. Many landscapers turned off by a juniper’s tendency to turn bronze in winter prefer Sargent, as it keeps its grayish-blue color year-round.

Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper (J. procumbens ‘Nana’), provides bluish-green foliage which turns a stunning purple-bronze in late fall and winter. Horticulturist Mitch Baker (my go-to guy) at American Plant in Bethesda, Maryland is enthusiastic about ‘Nana’s’ spray-like mounding habit, which provides an exciting departure from the flat mat-like appearance of many other species, and allowing for a level of dimension to your hillside.

Mitch also noted options beyond junipers, such as the confusingly-named Siberian Juniper (Microbiata decussata), which is also called either Russian Arborvitae or Siberian Carpet Cypress, due to the shape of its foliage. Siberian Juniper is fairly new on the market, but is quite versatile thanks to its tolerance for Siberian winters and partial (not full) shade, as well as average soil and dry conditions. This specimen’s feathery foliage stays within eight to 12 inches in height, with an above-average ten foot spread.

And “spread” is the name of the game with junipers and other ground covers. Obviously, the wider the area covered by the plant, the fewer plants you will need. Most junipers can be planted approximately six feet apart, although you should check – and do the math – before purchasing and planting. Larger container stock, about three gallons, will provide a vigorous root system, ideal for early season planting, and will get your hillside off to a fine start.

Costs can range from 15 to 35 dollars, depending on the cultivar, size, and source. Smaller containers will be less expensive, but might take years to fill in. Don’t make the mistake of buying a lot of smaller containers and planting them too close together to create a finished look. Overcrowding can lead to disease problems and might require substantial transplanting in just a few years. Remember, you want a low-maintenance landscape: plan and plant properly, according to your budget, and let time and patience do the rest.

Decide in advance if you want to address the entire hillside at once, or just tackle a portion at a time. For best results, smother the grass or weeds on the site with landscape fabric or cardboard and a three to six inch layer of shredded wood mulch. Shredded mulch will lock together in place, where nuggets or chips might be washed off. Be sure to stagger your planting holes so that plants can diffuse flow down the slope and prevent erosive gullies. Check your soil to see if it needs amending with compost – although most junipers are tolerant of relatively poor soils as long as they receive good drainage.

"Honey, I Shrunk the Lawn!"

Nothing is as satisfying as lawn care. Coping with brown patch, powdery mildew, drought, rain and weeds. In return, you enjoy the weekly mowing, noisy machinery, fumes, sweating, raking leaves, watering, and the cost of buying seed and fertilizer. Ah, it’s the good life. Haven’t you had enough? Maybe instead of just cutting your lawn, you should cut it down to size.

To reduce overall lawn area, first remember that some grassy spots may be desirable for active recreational use. Leave room for your croquet set and badminton court. Any other unused areas, however, are prime candidates for reduction.

The magic word in shrinking lawn area is mulch. Mulch can be used to eliminate grass under trees and shrubs, which will protect them from damage and disease caused by mower and weed trimmers. The mulch can be placed under trees as far out as the end of the dripline: the area under the outermost branches. In addition to conserving moisture, the mulch will also emphasize the shape and natural beauty of these featured specimens.

Mulch can also be used to widen existing planting beds. Rather than having turf run right up to the edge of foundation plantings, such as azaleas, use a one or two foot wide layer of shredded bark to create a attractive margin between the lawn and shrubs, setting off both visual elements to their best advantage.

Applying mulch effectively, or using it to eliminate turf, requires a very simple trick. Rather than digging out clumps of grass or employing toxic chemicals to kill it, simply smother it. Use either newspaper or cardboard as a sublayer for the mulch. Flattened old cardboard boxes work well, and will not blow around like newspaper, which needs to be about 20 sheets thick. Either will provide an organic “blanket” to smother grass and weeds, and they will both decompose after several months.

Another option, albeit somewhat more costly, is to use landscape fabric, which is available in rolls ready for use, although you will probably want to remove or scrape down any grass first, for easier application. On the other hand, it is not advisable to use plastic as a mulch as it prevents necessary air and water from penetrating to plant root zones.

After setting the sublayer in place, start spreading your choice of organic mulch about four to six inches deep. No more grass, weeds, or mowing! Best of all, mulch is free, if you get it from the county, a local municipality or a tree care company, or generally inexpensive if you prefer a higher grade product, even when delivered in bulk. Above all, mulching is good for the long-term health of all your plants.

Ground covers are the next step in lawn reduction. Although they are a bit more expensive than mulch, they provide an enormous range of aesthetic values for every taste and landscaping situation. In fact, they are far less costly than turf in the long run. Once ground covers are in place, they will generally continue to spread and thrive without any help and with minimum annual maintenance. Try to say that about a lawn.

There are ground covers for sun and shade, dry and wet conditions, and they can fit almost every budget. Moreover, by pairing ground covers with mulch, you can actually save a substantial amount of money and cover a far larger area than you might have imagined possible.

For example, you might not want to have only a large circle of mulch under a favorite crepe myrtle in your front yard. With mulch and sixty dollars, you can underplant a fairly mature tree with white-flowering sweet woodruff. Realize, of course, that your container-grown plants will be spaced about a foot or so apart the first year, but each will quickly fill in to form a solid mass within a couple of years -- and they will keep on spreading! Mulch and patience, or at least time, are the secret to a healthy ground cover economy.

As another example, consider pachysandra, one of the most popular, albeit overused, shade-tolerant ground covers. A flat of some 80 to 100 plants will provide a thick, dense effect covering just under 12 square feet, if planted about four inches apart. However, by setting down a layer of mulch and planting the pachysandra about six inches apart, you will cover a 25 square foot area. Not as lush at first, although the mulch will help visually, but after a year or two, your planting will be every bit as rich looking at less than half the cost.

Another important place to look at eliminating grass is at the front of your property. Rather than having a bleak rectangle of lawn facing the street, why not frame your lawn with either a continuous bed -- or series of beds -- of evergreen ground covers? The border effect will transform your lawn from the dominant visual element into a less overwhelming component.

In sunny areas, using hardy, drought-resistant ground covers like creeping juniper or carpet cyprus can add a bold new dimension to your landscape. Again, first establish your planting area by setting down cardboard and mulch, and then plant your ground-hugging evergreens. Plants often come in one, two, or three gallon containers, ranging from six to 25 dollars.

Larger plants naturally cover an area more quickly, but with time even the smaller one gallon specimen will achieve a spread of eight to 15 feet. Imagine framing a 10,000 square foot lawn with this sort of a planting. It may take a number of years to fill in, but for about as little as $500, you can almost cut your lawn area in half.

To this scene, add a few specimen trees, with mulch, several ornamental trees and shrubs like native viburnums, redbud, and serviceberry, also planted in mulch beds, and the odd new planting bed or two with clumping native grasses and wildflowers, and a 10,000 square foot lawn monster can become a pleasant green ribbon easily managed with a push reel mower.

Shrinking your lawn may raise a few neighborhood eyebrows. It may even constitute landscaping heresy to those poor marketing victims who have been brainwashed into thinking that turf is worth any sacrifice of time, money, and resources. But the true measure of your landscaping acumen will come on a hot, hazy Saturday afternoon, as you rest in your shaded hammock, sipping a mimosa, quietly enjoying superior property values, a beautiful setting, and a healthier environment. Now that’s the good life!
